Description

    Declaration Signer Thomas Stone Autograph Document Thrice Signed. One of the least common of the Declaration of Independence signers. One page, a partially printed legal document with docketing on verso, filled in entirely in his hand as attorney for the plaintiffs, 7.25" x 9.375", Charles County [Maryland], April 8, 1771. A summons issued against a Benjamin Higdon who owes six men thirty nine pounds, sixteen shillings, eleven pence. Signed twice as "T Stone" (once in docketing) and once as "Thomas Stone" in the body of text. Complete transcript included.

    Thomas Stone (1743-1787) was a delegate to the Continental Congress for Maryland and worked on the committee that drafted the Articles of Confederation. After his wife became ill due to a reaction to smallpox inoculation, he took her back home to Maryland and only rejoined the Congress briefly in 1778 and in 1784, when they met in the city of Annapolis, Stone acting briefly as president of Congress. Following his wife's untimely death in 1787, he became heart broken and died four months later.

    Condition: Lightly toned, several expert tape and tissue reinforcements on verso, one small area of paper loss from ink burn-through.
