Description

Declaration Signer George Ross Autograph Document Signed "G: Ross." One page, 7" x 11.5", legal document, no place, dated February 26, 1775. George Ross represented the state of Pennsylvania at the Continental Congress although he was born in Delaware. The letter reads in part, " Melehor Ingles law of Lancaster Count Yeoman otherwise called Melehor Ingols saddler of Virginia and province of Virginia was summoned (sic) to answer Joseph Simons of a plea that he render him thirty nine pounds eighteen shillings and six pence lawfully money of Pennsylvania which to him he owes…and where upon the said Joseph by George Ross his attorney saith that whereas the said Melehor twenty six day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and fifty five at Lancaster in the county of… " Ross, as a well-known and respected lawyer was invited to of sign the Declaration of Independence, and also served as a judge, who was known for his upright and fair rulings.

The letter is in very good condition with only a few minor problems despite its age. The paper has become very fragile due to acid degradation and has begun to split along the original fold lines; a large column near the right edge has been smeared by water damage; Ross' signature is slightly smeared on the end of his name. A fascinating early piece of American legal procedure and language. A linguistic treasure trove just waiting to be fully analyzed! Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
