Description

Declaration Signer Carter Braxton War Date Autograph Letter Signed. One page plus detached addressed leaf, 7.5" x 9.5", Williamsburg, November 18, 1777, to Jonathan Hudson. It reads, in part: "...every day to draw Bills upon me for a considerable amt...The Men of War are stationed in such a manner that our Boat cannot get to you for some time. Cable is still on board..." Braxton was born to a wealthy family in Virginia and lost nearly all his wealth during the Revolutionary War, due to both his financial support of the Union and also through attacks by the British. He loaned £10,000 to support the revolutionary cause and also sponsored shipping and privateering during the conflict, the losses from which eventually resulted in unrecoverable debt. In 1786, was forced to leave his inherited country estate for simple quarters in Richmond. The letter is in fair condition with general dampstaining, one tear affecting some text and a strip of paper at the left margin hiding a few words of text; still a war date letter from this early patriot is a great find. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
