DescriptionDeclaration Signer Benjamin Franklin Document Signed "B. Franklin." One page, 18.25" x 11.75", American Philosophical Society, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, July 21st, 1786. This document announces that Le Chevalier Gronchon of Paris had been elected to the American Philosophical Society at Philadelphia. Benjamin Franklin signs the document as President of the Society. Franklin was a leader in every sense of the word; he was a leader in the Enlightenment, a leader in the fight for independence, a leader in the establishment of a new government, and a leader in the early struggle for abolishing slavery. His accomplishments and interests are too many and varied to mention in such a short space. He was a scientist, politician, writer and many more things. He was the founder of the American Philosophical Society, a society formed for men to discuss their scientific discoveries. Franklin is the only man to sign all three documents that led to the founding of the United States: the Declaration of Independence, the Treaty of Paris and the Constitution. He truly is the "first American."
The document is in fine condition; usual folds are present; the seal is still intact and the ribbon is still bright and in excellent shape. The document is matted with decorative fillets alongside a handsome tinted engraving of Franklin that sits atop a plaque of his name and a small biography. All three of these are pulled together inside a frame; all together the display measures 35" x 22". Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
