    Description

David G. Burnet Government Bond Signed "David G. Burnet" as acting president of the Republic of Texas. One page, 10" x 7.5", August 1841, Austin. After Texas declared its independence from Mexico in March 1836, Burnet was elected ad interim president by delegates at the Convention of 1836. He served in this capacity until Sam Houston was elected president in October 1836. Later, Burnet was chosen as vice president under President Mirabeau B. Lamar, serving from 1838 through 1841. While vice president, he sometimes served as acting secretary of state and as acting president. Often out of step with the Texas public and antagonistic towards Sam Houston, he lost an 1841 bid for the presidency to Houston. This bond, listed as "No. 960" and countersigned by "Wm. Levey" as acting secretary of Treasury, contains three punch cancellations, one which cuts away the "t" from Burnet's signature. Some chipping along edges; tape on the verso to contain the cancellation punches. Fine.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
