    Daniel Webster Letter Signed as Secretary of State. Two pages, 8" x 13.5", Washington, May 5, 1851, to Augustus N. Leroy, with the original transmittal envelope. Webster instructs a diplomatic courier to proceed to Mexico City and deliver dispatches to the American Chargé d' Affaires and to Mexican President Arista. In fine condition, with a fantastic Webster signature. The transmittal envelope is toned, slightly soiled, and split at the seams.

    More Information:

    It reads, in part: "You will proceed with the communications herewith entrusted to you, to the City of New Orleans, where you will embark on the Revenue Cutter for Vera Cruz. You will thence deliver the dispatches to Mr. Smith, the Chargé d' Affaires of the United States. The packet addressed to President Arista, you will cause to be communicated to him by a safe hand. You will remain in Mexico until Mr. Smith shall have prepared dispatches to send by you on your return. It is probable that President Arista will also make you the bearer of communications for this City. On your return to Vera Cruz, you will again embark on the revenue cutter for New Orleans and on arriving there will return hither without any delay which can be avoided. Your compensation will be at the rate of six dollars a day from the time of your departure from until your return to Washington. You will also be allowed your necessary travelling expenses of which you will keep a regular account, which must be supported by such vouchers as you be able to obtain. The expenses attending your sojourn in the City of Mexico are not, however to be considered as travelling expenses. The sum of six hundred dollars is now advanced to you on account. You will also receive herewith a courier's passport, which you may find useful."
