DescriptionDaniel Tompkins Autograph Letter Signed as Vice President "Daniel D. Tompkins". One page, 7.5" x 9", Staten Island, New York, September 23, 1824, to Samuel L. Southard, Secretary of the Navy. Tompkins recommends George L. Bennet for a midshipman's warrant. The paper has toned, there is a small stain at the top center edge and there are two small closed tears on the right edge, otherwise it is in very good condition.
He writes in part: "Sir, I pray leave to recommend George L. Bennet for a midshipman's warrant. I have been acquainted with him some time & a long time with his [illegible] They are respectable & he of very prepossessing appearance of amiable disposition and intelligent. I there fore with peculiar confidence & with the sincere hope that he may succeed recommend him to your notice."
