Daniel Carroll of Duddington Signed Lottery Ticket. 3.75" x 1.75". A ticket for the Washington City Canal Lottery, bearing the number 15883. The ticket bears the notice: "THIS TICKET will entitle the Possessor to such Prize as may be drawn to its Number in Lottery No. 1. for cutting the CANAL, through the CITY of WASHINGTON, to the EASTERN-BRANCH HARBOUR." For many years, much of Washington was a swamp, crisscrossed with canals. Indeed at this time, much of the Washington Mall was under water. This particular canal, completed before 1820 ran from just west of the Capitol (adjacent to Pennsylvania Avenue) to the Eastern Branch of the Potomac. With age wear and toning.

More Information: Carroll was a member of the prominent Maryland political family that included Signer of the Declaration of Independence, Charles Carroll of Carrolton and John Carroll, the first Catholic Bishop in the United States. Daniel Carroll was a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and served in the First Congress of the United States. He was later appointed one of three commissioners to survey the District of Columbia and served as one of the City's Chief Administrators.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
