Description

Constitution Signer Jonathan Dayton Autograph Letter Signed "Jona: Dayton". One page, 8" x 9.75", Elizabethtown, New Jersey, October 14, 1801, to James Greenleaf. In part, "The time fixed for the payment of your note of One thousand Dollars having long since arrived, I take the liberty or reminding you of it, & of requesting your immediate attention to it..." James Greenleaf was a land speculator who, in the 1790s, controlled as many as one-third of the buildings for sale in Washington, D.C. The supply outstripped the demand and he went bankrupt. Dayton signed the Constitution as a representative of New Jersey and was a member of the Continental Congress 1787-1788. A land speculator himself, he got involved in the Aaron Burr scheme to set up an empire in the western United States, and was arrested for treason in 1807, ending his political career. The city of Dayton, Ohio is named after him, as he owned 250,000 acres of the state's land at one time. Fine condition, very clear and legible writing, also signed with his initials in the postscript. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
