Colonial & Early Americana Collection consisting of more than 24 items, mostly manuscript legal documents dated before 1800. They offer an absolutely fascinating look at our nation's past- the names and places are, in some cases, forgotten but they live on in these wonderful pieces of history. There are dozens of signatures here -- a goldmine for the researcher, historian, or dealer. Let's take a quick look at just a couple of these:

Elisha Pitkin- A one page handwritten document, 7.75" x 12.5", for a land sale, in part "...Hartford in the County of Hartford and Colony of Connecticutt [sic] New England...this 25th Day of January AD 1775 and in the 15th Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the 3rd of Great Britain & King..." Bears the signature of Pitkin, his son Elisha Jr., and John Pitkin as Justice of the Peace. The Pitkins were one of the earliest families in Connecticut, arriving from England in 1659.

Thomas Cadwalader- A gorgeous one page, handwritten document on vellum, 22" x 22", for a land sale in Burlington, New Jersey, in part "This Indenture Made the Sixth day of November in the Seventh year of the Reign of King George the third And in the year of our Lord One thousand and Seven Hundred and Sixty Six..." Cadwalader was a Physician and one of the founders of the Pennsylvania Hospital. He was one of the first to vaccinate his patients against smallpox.

The lucky winning bidder will receive many more similar to these mentioned. Great for display, would look great on your office or den wall. No doubt, a treasure trove of genealogical information could be gleaned from these great documents. Generally good to very good condition. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
