    Charles Sumner Letter Signed and Schuyler Colfax Letter Signed.

    Charles Sumner Letter Signed. One page, 7.75" x 9.75", Senate Chambers; December 17, 1862. A letter replying to inquiry about raising colored troops during the Civil War. He writes: "The matter of which you complain is the idea of a single individual - which has not yet assumed the magnitude of a lord, and probably never will." Signed, "Charles Sumner." It reads "Colored Troops" in pencil at top center. With flattened folds and light age toning. Docketed on verso, with heavy soiling thereat. Additional annotations in pencil on verso.

    Schuyler Colfax Letter Signed. One page on Vice President's Chamber letterhead, 5" x 8", Washington; July 6, 1870. A letter regretfully declining an invitation to a reunion of the New England Press. Colfax explains that he will be at home in Indiana at the time of the reunion. Signed, "Schuyler Colfax." Flattened mail folds and age toning. Some soiling along folds on verso, with a single stray stain and annotations in pencil. Docketed on verso.
