DescriptionCharles Sumner Autograph Quote Signed. One page, 6.5" x 8", Boston; May 19, 1855. In full: "Ours is a noble cause; nobler than that of our Fathers, inasmuch as it is more exalted to struggle for the Freedom of others than for our own. Charles Sumner. Boston May 19th '55."
Sumner's speeches against slavery in the Congressional session of 1854 and 1855 began to bring him national attention. He was invited to speak to an audience at the Metropolitan Theater in New York on May 9, 1855. His address, titled "The Anti-slavery Enterprise," had an immediate impact and was printed and disseminated throughout the north. The quote offered here, is from that address, and is written just ten days after his address was originally given. Likely scribed at the request of an admirer, and evidence of Sumner's standing as a nationally recognized leader. Bold ink, with a few stray ink stains likely occurring at the time of writing.
