Description

    Charles Pinckney Autograph Letter Signed "Charles Pinckney," one page, 7.75" x 9.5". Charleston, May 20, 1801. To Elbridge Gerry. In full, "I have the pleasure to introduce to you Doctor Blyth a gentleman of great respectability in this State now on a Jour through the United States - he is a member of our State Senate & was one of our republican Electors at our Election in Columbia. I feel much pleasure in introducing the Doctor to your acquaintance." Charles Pinckney, a signer of the Constitution, served in the Continental Congress (1785-1787) and the U.S. Senate (1798-1801) and House of Representatives (1819-1821). On June 6, 1801, just 17 days after Pinckney wrote this letter, President Jefferson appointed him U.S. Minister to Spain. He served until 1804. Elbridge Gerry, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, refused to sign the Constitution, but eventually supported it. Pinckney is scare in ALsS. Show-through at left margin from mounting remnants on verso. Fine condition.
