Description

Charles DeMorse $100 Republic of Texas Stock Certificate Signed. One sheet with ten interest coupons, 9.75" x 7.5"; Austin, June 15, 1840. Engraved by the Southern Bank Note Co. and Endicott & Clark of New Orleans. DeMorse, the Texas Stock Commissioner tasked with funding the republic's mounting public debt, has issued this certificate to Jean Pierre Alphonse Dubois de Saligny. After reporting favorably on the conditions of the Republic of Texas, Dubois was assigned as chargé d'affaires of a new French legation to relations with the young nation. Dubois arrived in Texas in January 1840, and established a residence in Austin. During his short tenure he worked to secure lands confiscated from the Catholic Church during the Revolution; but also became embroiled in politics, most notably drawing the ire of then president Mirabeau Lamar. Dubois' troubles culminated in a dispute with his landlord Richard Bullock, which caused a break in relations with France. The dispute would be coined "The Pig War". The certificate offered here was issued to him six months after his arrival. The certificate is framed with a window on the back to display his signature, "A. de Saligny", an affectation he adopted (he was not a noble). Matted and framed to an overall size of 22" x 30".

Condition: With toning and some showthrough from endorsement signature on verso.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
