    Description

Charles Carroll of Carrollton Autograph Letter Signed " C.C. of Carrollton." One page, 8" x 10.25", n.p.; November 4, 1767. Letter from a future signer of the Declaration of Independence to unnamed correspondents regarding business matters. He writes in part:

    "Gent

It appears to be ye sense of ye majority that a partner may supply provisions in kind, provided ye supply is made in proper time, & as cheap as it can be had from others: I shall therefore supply my proportion of corn & continue to supply it when it can be spared from my plantations, leaving such partners, who think proper & to whom it may be more convenient, to supply their proportion of cash..." He adds in a postscript: " if any partner puts in slaves to reap ye advantage of their labour, I will do ye same & perhaps this may be found ye most eligible method on ye present situation of things: as one of ye gentlemen is averse to any purchase whatever of slaves, and another is not well able, if willing, to purchase."

The letter is accompanied by a typewritten transcription, along with an engraving of Charles Carroll of Carrollton.

Condition: The letter has the usual folds, has a tear two-thirds across horizontal fold right below middle of letter, slight paper loss along left-hand margin; fragile.
