Cesar Rodney Autograph Letter Signed as President of Delaware. One-half page, 7.75" x 13", Dover [Delaware], April 17, 1778, to the "Gentlemen of the Assembly". It reads, in full:

"As I imagine it will [be] necessary, in order to conduct with energy the business of this state in the Executive Department, that a Constant Communication should be kept up between the Chief Magistrate and the Continental Congress. I beg leave to recommend to your Honors the making [of] an Allowance to some person to ride once in every week, from this town to the Post Office in Lancaster, and to Continue to do it so long as it shall be found necessary, and that the House should direct the mode of applying the allowance."

Two years earlier, Rodney, as a member of the Continental Congress, famously rode all night to Philadelphia, braving a thunderstorm, arriving just in time to break a deadlock in the Delaware delegation so it could approve the Declaration of Independence, which he later signed. The General Assembly had just elected Rodney president eighteen days before this letter was written.

Condition: Rough edges, light transfer of the entire letter to the lower half of the sheet from where it was originally folded.
