DescriptionCarter Braxton Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages with integral address leaf, 6.5" x 8.25", December 3, 1790. Declaration of Independence signer Carter Braxton writes to Samuel Griffin with instructions regarding certificates: "Mr. Geo Gray & myself being under some treaty . . . whatever Certificates you receive for me - be pleased to inclose them to him or to his order." Directly under Braxton's instructions, Gray has directed Samuel Griffin to send "the above Certificates final Settlements to Jonathan Williams." On the verso, Jon Williams notes that he has "Received a Certificate . . . issued from the registers office of the United States in favour Carter Braxton . . . for twelve hundred & sixty four dollars 26/100." Toned with light ink bleedthrough from the verso. Carefully inset into a larger archival sheet to an overall size of 7" x 8.75".
Braxton (1736-1797) was heavily engaged in financing the Patriot cause during the Revolution, funding merchant ships as well as privateers, and lost his fortune in the process.
