Brigham Young Letter Signed Within Months of His Death. Two pages on light blue ruled paper, 7.75" x 9.75", St. George, Utah, April 3, 1877, to A. O. Smoot, Provo, Utah. The letter reads:"Your letter of March 22nd has been duly received. In regard to the Peter Stubbs' land you might talk with Bro James Wrenn about it. See Peter Stubbs' and if it is adjudged to be worth no more than $500 tell him I am ready to pay this amount of money to him for it. We join you in regret that you are not able to be present with us at conference. A goodly number of Brethren and sisters from the North are here and others constantly arriving. Today we expect the arrival of Prest. W. H. Wells and Elder Geo. Q. Cannon. When they come, all the First Presidency and Eleven of the Twelve will be here. The Lord willing we expect to have a good profitable season of instruction and rejoicing together. Bp. Edward Hunter arrived last Sunday afternoon, and though somewhat fatigued by the journey, feels right well in body and in spirit. With kindest regards to your family and to the brethren associates with you". Folding creases and one small marginal split, else crisp and very fine. Young had been president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for nearly 30 years when he penned this letter to his colleague Abraham O. Smoot. One can sense Young's satisfaction and pride as he describes the well-attended St. George conference. Smoot himself would have pleased with the event since he was among Utah's earliest and most prominent Mormon settlers, serving variously as mayor of both Salt Lake City and Provo.
