Benjamin Rush Autograph Letter Signed. One page with integral address leaf, 7.25" x 9", n.p., August 2, 1795. Founding father and Signer of the Declaration, Rush writes to John Nicholson, Comptroller General of Pennsylvania, to introduce Mr. Miller and recommend his services. In full: "Mr. Miller the bearer of this letter is the gentleman whose name I mentioned to you in the Street. From his respectable connections in Scotland, his strong accommodations for talent & probity to many people in this city, & from all that I have seen of him, I am satisfied that you may rely fully upon him to carry into effect the plan of settling your Lands on the Susquehanna, or any other part of the State. Yours sincerely, Benj. Rush." Docketed on address leaf: "Mr. M was prevented from visiting on Mr. Nicholson yesterday by the excessive, stormy weather..." In 1793, intended as a place of asylum for those fleeing the French Revolution, John Nicholson and his partner Robert Morris devised a plan to purchase one million acres of land along the Susquehanna River. It appears that Mr. Miller was sent to assist Nicholson with settlement of this acreage by French émigrés. However, the endeavor was doomed to failure, and a few years later, Nicholson was imprisoned for outstanding debts totaling more than four million dollars. Letter is slightly toned; address leaf seal tear has been professional restored.
