    Benjamin Harrison signed Revolutionary War recruitment officer appointment

    Benjamin Harrison Revolutionary War Dated Signed Appointment for a Recruitment Officer. Single sheet, addressed on verso, 9" x 7.5", "In Council," September 4, 1782. Member of the first Continental Congress and Signer of the Declaration of Independence, Benjamin Harrison also served as the fifth Governor of Virginia. In that capacity, he issued this notice to "Commanding Officer Berkley." Berkley is informed that Capt. Williams has been appointed "the recruiting Officer for your County, to whom you will please to pay from time to time as he may call for it, such money as you may have left in your hands, after paying the bounty to the drafted men, under the Act of the last Assembly, intitled [sic], 'An Act for raising this State's quota of troops to serve in the army of the United States.' You will also please to deliver to him any recruits or drafts you may have received under the said Act, taking his receipt for them." Document bears a few chips along edges. Red wax seal; minor seal tear does not affect text or signature.
