DescriptionBenjamin Franklin Autograph Letter Signed "B Franklin". One page, 7.25" x 8.25", Philadelphia, April 3, 1755. A letter to his brother, John Franklin about raising money for New England forces:
"Dear Brother, Your Commissioner or Agent Mr. Quincey has done wonders here. He has executed his Commission extremely well and obtained yesterday a mote for 10,000 £ in provisions for your New England Forces, which will be rendered effectual without the Necessity of the Governor's Assent to order for the purpose. Gov. Shirley is not yet come, but daily expected. My love to all New England. I am in haste. Your affectionate Bro / B Franklin."
The provisions being raised were for military recruits in response to the war with France. The French and Indian War began in 1754, and by March of 1755, the General Assembly of Connecticut authorized salaries for recruits. It was during this period that Franklin produced the famous "Join or Die" image to unite the colonies against the French and Native Americans.
