Bailey Hardeman Manuscript Draft Signed as Secretary of the Treasury In the Amount of Five Thousand Dollars. One page, 8.75" x 4.75", with endorsement on verso. Harrisburg, March 25, 1836. In full: "Treasury Department of the Republic of Texas / Harrisburg, 25th March 1836 / Messrs McKinney & Williams / Gent. The five thousand Dollars which the Govt. is authorized to draw on your house for by order of Mr. Saml St. John for you will please place the credit of this Gov't with you. [signed] Bailey Hardeman Secy of Treasury."

Endorsed on the verso: "Mr. Saml St. John Jr. will please pay on the within three thousand dollars to the order of Messers T. Toby & Brother the balance having been charged as advised by you under date 22 Feby 1836. [signed] McKinney & Williams."

Bailey Hardeman (1795-1836) attended the Convention of 1836, and was a member of the committee that drafted the Texas Declaration of Independence. He was also elected to serve as Secretary of the Treasury at this time. Although not numbered, the draft offered here is likely part of the $100,000 loan that McKinney & Williams were authorized to effect by decree two months earlier.

Condition: Gently toned, with some showthrough from the endorsement on verso. Light dampstaining, and a few mounting remnants at margins on verso.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
