DescriptionAmerican Statesmen Group Lot of Five Letters:
John Wanamaker Typed Letter Signed. One page on his business letterhead, 5.5" x 9"; Philadelphia, April 24, 1899. A letter thanking the recipient for his support in "resisting the audacious Governor's action..." The letter has light soiling and mounting remnants on verso. Together with a small tobacco card featuring Wanamaker and a 3 cent postage stamp.
Henry Cabot Lodge Typed Letter Signed. One page on United State Senate letterhead, 8" x 10.5"; Washington, stamped November 12, 1921. Lodge writes a letter as Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations: "I desire nothing so much as to bring the question of the limitation of armaments to the most successful conclusion as possible..." With flattened folds and light creasing.
Oscar S. Straus Autograph Quotation Signed on an embossed note card, 5" x 3.25". In full: "Righteousness which exalted a nation will not protect, unless other nations a likewise exalted. National weakness does not make for peace - it invites aggression. Oscar S. Straus." Minor staining from adhesives on verso, and pencil notation at top left. Near fine.
Elihu Root Typed Letter Signed. One page, 5.25" x 6.75"; New York; April 19, 1920. A letter sending his autograph. With file holes at top.
James Campbell Letter Signed as Postmaster General. One page, 7.75" x 9.75"; January 15, 1856. A letter to Samuel H. Huntington transmitting "additional papers in the Leavenworth case" [not present]. Near fine with flattened folds. Left edge is uneven, suggesting that blank integral was removed.
Lot also includes a small newspaper clipping regarding Benjamin Harrison's cabinet. From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.
