Alexander Stephens Autograph Letter Signed "Alexander Stephens" as the Confederate vice president. Two and one-half pages of a bifolium, 4" x 6.25", Richmond, March 29, 1862. In this letter, the vice president recommends a young engineer, Assistant Master Amassa Ring of the Confederate Armory at Richmond, to Georgia Governor Joseph Brown. (Ring had formerly been employed at the armory at Harpers Ferry.) As he explains in his letter, Vice President Stephens considered Ring "well qualified - superior quality to Mr. Jones who I understand is now in the Service of the State. Mr. Ring is quite a mechanical genius. . . . I feel assured if you have any business such a man a better or fitter on cannot be got in the Confederacy." The letter bears some ink spots and age-toning. Separation along the central vertical fold.
