Description

Alexander Hamilton Document Signed "A. Hamilton". One partially-printed page, 6.75" x 8.75" (sight), "Treasury Department", July 3, 1792. Hamilton, as Secretary of the Treasury acknowledges a payment made by James M. Lingan: "A paid draught of the Treasurer, No. 3191 - amount one thousand five hundred Dollars has been received from you at this office." Matted and framed with an engraving of Hamilton to the overall size of 23.5" x 19.5".

James McCubbin Lingan (1751-1812) had been an officer in the Continental Army during the American Revolution, and later was one of the founders of the Society of the Cincinnati. During the War of 1812, Lingan strongly advocated for freedom of speech and opposed the censorship of newspapers in Baltimore. Tragically, Lingan was killed by a mob that had descended upon the Baltimore City Jail after some of its group had been arrested. Ex. Norman Cousins Estate.

Condition: Letter is lightly toned along mail folds, with two small areas of paper loss that have no effect on the text.
