Alexander Hamilton Autograph Letter Signed "A Hamilton." One page, 7.75" x 9.5" (sight), New York, September 9, 1798. Writing to Secretary of War James McHenry regarding the appointment of Hamilton's nephew, Philip Church, the former secretary of the treasury says, in full: "I think I heretofore mentioned to you that to avoid the chance of difficulty with the President [John Adams] I had written or would write to him urging the appointment of Mr. Philip Church to a Captaincy. I have just received a very obliging letter from him in which he assures me of his willingness to appoint him to that grade & that he would write to you accordingly. There is all difficulty on this point removed. In proportion as to I look to the event of my laying down my military character in my solicitude that this young Gentleman shall be eligibly placed." Smoothed folds. Small area of ink ghosting to the left of Hamilton's signature from folding. Slight ink smudging in places. Matted with an engraved portrait of Hamilton to an overall size of 20.25" x 15.75".

Hamilton had returned to military service earlier in 1798 with the rank of major general and served for six months as senior officer of the army. Just three months after he wrote this letter, Hamilton named Capt. Church an aide-de-camp on his staff.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
