Description

Alexander H. Stephens Collection. This lot features three pieces signed by or relating to the Vice President of the Confederacy, Alexander H. Stephens. There are two signatures and one letter written by his nephew John A. Stephens on his behalf. Also included with these documents is a carte de visite of Stephens, depicting him seated in a chair wearing a dapper suit and gloves. The letter from his nephew John is regarding his uncle's inability to give a lecture that was requested. The first of the two signatures is from a free franked envelope that has been clipped down and mounted on a larger sheet of paper. The second signature reads, "With a great deal of pleasure, yours very truly, Alexander Stephens." He signs this card from Liberty Hall on the 21st of December 1871. Stephens was strongly opposed to abolishing slavery, and served as the first vice president of the Confederacy.

The signatures are in very fine condition; they are mounted on larger cards. The letter is in very fine condition; usual folds are present. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
