    Description

Alexander H. Stephens Autograph Quote Signed. One page, 4" x 2.5", Crawfordville [Georgia], October 23, 1881. Stephens is here quoting Alexander Pope from his "An Essay on Man": "Honor and shame from no condition rise. Act well your part, there all honor lies." Uneven toning.

More Information: Stephens is best known for serving as vice president for the Confederate States of America. Following the Civil War, Stephens served five months in prison and then, in 1866, was elected to the U.S. Senate where he served until 1882, when he resigned to take the office of governor of Georgia.
