Albert Gallatin Autograph Letter Signed, "Albert Gallatin." Four-page bifolium, 8" x 9.75", New York, New York; June 1, 1816. Letter by Gallatin (1761-1849), former Secretary of the Treasury and soon to be U.S. Minister to France, to Robert Alexander (1767-1841) a Kentucky farmer, banker, and politician, in Frankfort, Kentucky concerning tracts of land in Kentucky. Gallatin writes, in part,

"While looking for purpose of effecting a settlement with Mr. Savary's estate over land papers which I had not examined for 25 years, I have discovered a circumstance which induces the belief that the estate and myself are in equity bound to indemnify the heirs of Honore Giroud, (deceased in 1787) for some military land held in our name....Having the direction of Giroud's relation, (his name is Preaut) who was established at Macon in Burgundy, I can find the heirs, but will not make any communication to them, until I have heard from you on the subject."

Condition: Letter has the usual folds, slight weakness at ends of crease, plus slight toning; otherwise good.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
