Albert Gallatin 1806 Autograph Letter Signed as Secretary of the Treasury "Albert Gallatin". One page, 8" x 9.75", July 11, 1806, in ink, to William McPherson, Philadelphia. Abraham Alphonse Albert Gallatin (1761-1849) seeks the opinion of McPherson in the matter of establishing the salaries for keepers of the lighthouses at Sandy Hook (New Jersey), Cape Henry (Virginia), and Cape Henloperan (Delaware). Gallatin proposes a $400.00 annual salary should be paid to the lighthouse keepers. Prior to Gallatin's tenure as Secretary of the Treasury, control of lighthouses came under the jurisdiction of the Commissioner of Revenue. Gallatin kept control of the lighthouses for nearly all of his two terms as Treasurer, after which control once again returned to the Commissioner of Revenue. The letter has the usual fold creases with some toning to the paper, else fine condition. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.
