President Lincoln signs a document concerning the Smithsonian InstituteAbraham Lincoln Document Signed "Abraham Lincoln" as president. One partly-printed page, 7.75" x 8.75", Washington, November 12, 1862, directing State Secretary William Seward to affix the U.S. Seal for three Smithsonian Institution agents. This document is affixed on the reverse at two places along the top edge to a larger backing for an overall size of 8.5" x 9.5". Smoothed folds and wrinkles. Three filing holes exist in the left margin. Some very minor paper loss exists at three corners. A few nicks and slight tears exist along edges. Tears through "Lincoln" have been repaired. Some soiling to the leaf. In full:
"I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to a full power to Messrs. Fladgate, Clarke & Finch, agents for the Smithsonian Institution, dated this day, and signed by me and for so doing this shall be his warrant. [Signed] Abraham Lincoln. Washington, 12th November 1862."
