Description1860 Election: Request for a Speaker at the Nomination of Breckinridge and Lane. One page, 7.75" x 9.25", Philadelphia, June 29, 1860. Requesting Robert Tyler to "address the Grand Mass Meeting to be held . . . July 2, 1860 to ratify the action of the Baltimore Convention in nominating Hon. John C. Breckenridge [sic] for President and Hon. Joseph Lane for Vice President." The letter is signed by G. M. Wharton, William D. Lewis, Jr., G. C. Mitchell, and Alfred Day. With smoothed folds. The sheet has been hinged to a slightly larger sheet.
The letter reads in full: "The undersigned have been appointed a committee to request you to address the Grand Mass Meeting to be held in Independence Square, on Monday Evening, July 2, 1860 to ratify the action of the Baltimore Convention in nominating Hon. John C. Breckenridge [sic] for President and Hon. Joseph Lane for Vice President of the U.S. If you will favor the Democracy on that occasion you will please signify your acceptance at as early a days as possible in order that you may be announced as one of the Speakers."
