1774 Arthur St. Clair Autograph Letter Signed "Art. S. Clair". Two pages, 7.25" x 9", Ligoneer [Pennsylvania], June 22, 1774, to James Wilson, Carlisle. In 1774, the colony of Virginia made a claim on the area around Pittsburgh. Many residents of western Pennsylvania took up arms to repel them and Arthur St. Clair issued an order for the arrest of the officer leading the Virginia troops. The fracas resulted in "Lord Dunmore's War", a conflict between the colony of Virginia and the Shawnee and Mingo Indians. This letter makes reference to the latter and reads, in part: "I am still in hopes our Troubles will blow over nay I am certain they will if the Virginians will let the Indians alone, but that I doubt, On Sunday last A Party was sent from the Fort to murder the Shawness [sic] who had escorted our Traders." The letter has been tipped on to a larger backing sheet and mounted with an illustration of "The Hermitage", Arthur St. Clair's family home. The letter is toned with the usual mail folds , else fine. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.
