[XYZ Affair]. Timothy Pickering Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 8" x 12.25", Philadelphia, November 20, 1797. While commissioners negotiated with France for an economic treaty during the first months of the Adams administration (in an event that came to be known as the XYZ Affair), America began to collect arms in the case of open war with France. Here, Secretary of State Timothy Pickering writes to Gen. Matthew Clarkson and James Watson, in full: "I believe I have already forwarded to you the original and duplicate of the inclosed letter from Mr. King [Rufus King was minister to Great Britain], relative to the five thousand stands of arms which he has procured in London for the State of New York. This triplicate arrived today." Hostilities between the U.S. and France never erupted on land, but led to an undeclared naval war called the Quasi-War. Folds. Minor damage along the central vertical folds has led to some loss of paper, but does not affect the text. Scattered foxing.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
