Portrait of Lafayette presented to Warren Burger

[Warren E. Burger] 18th Century Period Oil Painting of the Marie Joseph Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette Titled "Le Sermont". Presented to Supreme Court Justice Warren E. Burger. Oil on canvas, unsigned, 15" x 18", circa 1790. Prior to the start of the French Revolution, King Louis XVI appointed Lafayette to serve on a national assembly in hopes of finding a means to prevent financial crisis. The assembly included members from all facets of French society, and the first point of business was to determine how the assembly would work, ostensibly determining if all members would have equal voting power or if the nobility would carry more weight. Their first stumbling block mounted, the assembly locked itself behind closed doors and swore not to disband until a Constitution was established. Titled "The Oath of Genera Lafayette", the scene is a dramatic rendering of Lafayette and fellow delegates taking this oath (later referred to as the Tennis Court Oath).

A note affixed to the back of the painting in Burger's hand reads: "Presented to me Septe 1976 in Paris by Roger Frey, President of the Constitutional Council of France on behalf of himself & his eight colleagues individually to commemorate my visit. Warren E. Burger / 9/23/78".

The painting is framed in gilt with red highlights to an overall size of 21" x 24". The frame is likely 19th Century, and bears s note taped on verso at bottom that reads: "la figure a l'Exposition de la Villa de Paris / Musee Carnau." Painting has a small hole at top, in a dark area well away from the central composition. Obtained directly from the Burger family.
