[Timothy Pickering] Octavius Pickering Autograph Letter Signed with Autograph Extracts of Depositions and Engraved Image. Eight pages, penned on recto and verso, 7.75" x 9.75", Cambridge, September 9, 1858. In 1858, Reverend George Peck published Wyoming; Its History, Stirring Incidents, and Romantic Adventures, which included a discussion of Col. Timothy Pickering's role in settling Connecticut and Pennsylvania claims to the Wyoming Valley; when Pickering attempted to oust Connecticut settlers living in the area, he was captured and held hostage for nineteen days. Pickering's son Octavius took great exception to Peck's retelling of these events, and wrote this detailed letter explaining his understanding of Col. Pickering's actions and the actions taken by those who opposed him.In part: "In the purpose of your interesting volume on Wyoming, you say 'Our object has been strict conformity to historic truth.' I do not call in question the sincerity of this declaration, but I hope, and believe, that in some of your remarks concerning my father (Col. Pickering) you have failed. . . . I request your perusal of the accompanying extracts from depositions, &c. . . ." There follows seven pages (penned on recto and verso) of Octavius' handwritten extracts from depositions taken from those who participated in the abduction of Col. Pickering. The original transmittal envelope is also included, as well as an 8.5" x 7.25" engraving of Timothy Pickering taken from an unidentified book. Engraving is moderately age toned and foxed. Octavius' letter and extracts are boldly penned and show minimal age toning. Fine condition.
