Description

[Texas Rangers]. Texas Governor Richard S. Coke Appointment of Jesse Lee Hall. One page, 18.25" x 14.5", Austin, August 10, 1876. This is the actual appointment of Texas Ranger Jesse Leigh Hall as a "Second Lieutenant in Special State Troops of Texas." Folds are weak with slight separation at the edges and intersection of the folds. Lightly toned.

Jesse Lee (Leigh) Hall (1849-1911), a native of North Carolina, came to Texas as a schoolteacher in 1869, but began his law career shortly thereafter, serving for a time as marshal for the town of Sherman, deputy sheriff for Denison, and sergeant at arms for the Texas Senate in Austin. Hall joined the Texas Rangers as a second lieutenant under Captain Leander H. McNelly. When the latter became ill, Hall assumed command of the company, serving as captain until 1880, and was instrumental in ending the Sutton-Taylor Feud. He served as agent for the Andarko Indians in the late 1880s. He briefly returned to the Rangers in 1889 as a private in Company "F." He also saw service in the U.S. Army during the Spanish-American War as a scout in the Philippines.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
