    More Information:

Following the Mexican War, Clark served as the Texas secretary of state and later as lieutenant governor under Governor Sam Houston. After Texas seceded from the Union, Governor Houston refused to take an oath of allegiance to the Confederacy. As a result, he was removed from office and replaced by Clark, who served as the eighth governor of Texas for nine months. After the Civil War, he fled to Mexico for a short time.
