    Description

[Slavery]. Order Form for The Address of Southern Delegates in Congress, to their Constituents Signed by Thirty-Seven Secessionists. One page with integral blank, 8" x 12.5", n.p., n.d. [circa January 22, 1849]. According to the form, the sixteen page booklet was being sold at "$1.00 per hundred." Included are the signatures of thirty-seven Southern members of the House of Representatives and the number of copies each man has ordered. Names include Archibald Atkinson, Thomas H. Bayly, James S. Green, Thomas S. Bocock, et al. Bocock (1815-1891) served as speaker of the Confederate House of Representatives from February 1861 until the end of the war. An additional four names appear at the end of the list in pencil. Smoothed folds. Spots of ink smudging are found at some of the signatures and there is an overall unevenness to the toning.

The Mexican War (1846-1848) was opposed by many in both houses of the U.S. Congress. Northerners saw it as a means for the South to expand the institution of slavery, beginning with the annexation of Texas as the newest slave state. Many in the South, such as Senator John C. Calhoun (1782-1850) of South Carolina, saw it as a way for the North to destroy Southern ways, fearing the North would disallow slavery in all of the new territory acquired from Mexico. In response to his suspicions, Calhoun spearheaded the publication of the Address of the Southern Delegates. In it, the delegates address the North's alleged violations of the Southern states' constitutional rights and warn their constituents of the inevitable forced freeing of the slaves and the descent of the South into chaos. Fewer than forty percent of the delegates of the South signed the Address.
