Description[Revolutionary War]. Matthew Tilghman Military Appointment Signed "Mat. Tilghman." One partially-printed page, 13.25" x 8.25", Annapolis [Maryland], January 3, 1776, appointing "Addison Murock Esquire . . . to be first Major of the twenty fifth Battalion of Militia of this Province." One area of separation where the lower edge meets the vertical fold. Pencil notation at the lower edge and upper left corner.
Tilghman (1718-1790) was a Maryland planter who served as chairman of the Maryland Committee of Safety and as the head of the Maryland delegation to the Continental Congress. In addition, he was president of the Annapolis Convention, also known as the Assembly of Freemen, and it was in this capacity that he signed the above document. Through the war he served in the new Maryland State Senate, his final three years as its president.
