    [Revolutionary War]. Massachusetts Bay Executive Council: Judicial Appointment Signed by Sixteen Members. One partially-printed page, 11" x 17.5" (sight), Watertown, November 2, 1775, appointing "David Cheever Esq. to be a Justice of Our Inferior Court of common pleas in the County of Middlesex." Signed along the left edge by Benjamin Lincoln (future general in the Continental Army), Acting Governor Moses Gill, Perez Morton (future speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives) as deputy secretary, Continental Congress delegate Samuel Holton, James Otis Sr. (father of orator James Otis Jr. of "Taxation without representation is tyranny" fame), Walter Spooner, Caleb Cushing, Benjamin Chadbourne, Joseph Gerrish, John Whitcomb, Jedediah Foster, James Prescott, Eldad Taylor, Michael Farley, Joseph Palmer, and Jabez Fisher.

    Prior to his appointment, Judge Cheever had served on the Committee of Supplies responsible for provisioning rebel troops in the field.

    Condition: Separation of horizontal fold has resulted in some paper loss in the middle and at the edges, affecting most of Benjamin Lincoln's signature. Moderate amount of foxing. Matted and framed to an overall size of 18.25" x 24.5".
