Description

[Republic of Texas]. Sam Houston Passport Signed as the first president of the Republic of Texas. Four pages of a bifolium, 7.75" x 6.5", Columbia, Texas, November 4, 1836. Only days after being sworn in as the first president of the newly formed Republic of Texas, Sam Houston signs this passport allowing Reuben T. Conley "freely to pass." Toned paper with staining, soiling, and some foxing. Weakness at the folds have been professionally reinforced. Houston's large signature includes his well-known paraph. The document reads:

"In the name of the Republic of Texas free sovereign and Independent to all to whom these presents may concern greeting. You are commanded to suffer freely to pass Reuben T. Conley a citizen of said Republic and in case of need to render him all lawful aid and assistance. Given under my hand at Columbia this fourth day of November AD. 1836 and of the Independence of said Republic the first. [Signed] Sam Houston."

On another page of the biofolium is a Reuben Conley bill of sale signed by Conley and dated 1837. The remaining two pages are Republic of Texas affidavits related to Conley. A paper seal exists on one page. The first Congress of the Republic of Texas convened on October 3, 1836, in Columbia, the location that President Houston signed this document.
