[Republic of Texas] Richard Morris Admiralty Court Order Signed. One page, 8" x 10", "February Term 1843", [Galveston]. The order of the District Court [First Judicial District] acting as a Court of Admiralty commands the sale of the "Schooner Shoal Water, her tackle, apparel, and furniture" to satisfy a judgment of $160. Slight roughness on the left side, even toning, thus fine.

    More Information:

Richard Morris arrived in Texas in 1838 and went into partnership in Houston with another Virginia native, James Davis until 1840. Morris then relocated to Galveston and established a successful law practice on his own. In 1841 President Lamar appointed Morris, just twenty-six years old, judge of the First Judicial District, which automatically made him an associate justice of the Supreme Court. He sat on three sessions before dying of yellow fever in Galveston in 1844.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
