Description

[Mexican War] and [General John E. Wool]. Four Francis Baylies Letters to General Wool, In these letters, Francis Baylies (1783-1852), a U.S. Congressman from Massachusetts and a charismatic writer, colorfully communicates details about the Mexican War, American politics, and current events to Wool, who was "Commander of the Army of Occupation" at Monterrey, Mexico. Letters exhibit some soiling and separations along some folds. All are written in bold ink.

On April 4, 1847, Baylies writes a three-page letter congratulating Wool on his "escape from the perils of the bloody field of Buena Vista, and on the acquisition of new honors." In his four-page letter dated February 22, 1848, Baylies writes about the annexation of Texas, which he believed "brought us into the condition of war with Mexico." This letter contains much more content on Texas' annexation and the war with Mexico. Baylies also writes about the "news of a treaty of Peace" (the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo) and the presidential contest ("the contest will ultimately settle down on Taylor, Clay and Cass").

In his eight-page letter dated March 4, 1848, Baylies makes his prediction regarding the upcoming presidential election: "[Zackary] Taylor will win the battle with more ease than he did the battle of Buena Vista." This letter also contains much more information on the peace treaty with Mexico and the falling out between Generals Winfield Scott and William Worth.

In his April 1851 letter (no day is given), Baylies writes to Noble S. Elderkin (a New York politician) and General Grover Laurence regarding a manuscript Baylies had written for the press on General Wool's Mexican campaign. Also included is a three-page manuscript of "The Sword" (no date).
