Description

[Josiah Bartlett]. Bartlett Coat of Arms. This distinctive and colorful hand-drawn coat of arms belonged to the family of Josiah Bartlett, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. It measures 7" x 9.25" and reads below the shield, "Fide et Confide/ Bartlett" (faithful and boldly). On the verso is a handwritten account of the history of the Bartlett name, beginning in 1000 AD with the arrival of William the Conqueror in England ("The English had no Surnames when William the Conquerer came. . . .") This drawing is fragile, with some separations. Both right and left edges are uneven, resulting in the loss of some of the text on the verso. A section of the coat of arms has been excised. Taped repairs exist on the verso.

New Hampshire physician Josiah Bartlett (1729-1795) represented his state in many capacities during and following the Revolutionary War, including as a delegate to the Continental Congress, as chief justice of the New Hampshire Superior Court, and as governor. Bartlett married his cousin, Mary Bartlett, in 1754; they had twelve children, insuring that the family name would continue.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
