[John Peter Zenger] New-York Weekly Journal. Four pages, 7.25" x 12", July 22, 1734, "Numb. XXXVIII". The New-York Weekly Journal, one of the oldest American newspapers, was "Printed and Sold by John Peter Zenger [page 4]." Zenger's libel trial, one year after this printing, was a landmark case for the protection of a free press. In the verdict, the German immigrant was deemed not guilty of the charge of publishing seditious libels against New York's governor. The case garnered much public attention, especially because of the support given Zenger by Benjamin Franklin, the publisher of Poor Richard's Almanack. This Journal, which contains the "freshest Advices, Foreign, and Domestick", is fragile with partial separations at the folds. From the Papers of William Vernon.
