Humphrey Marshall Autograph Letter Signed. One page, July 30, 1845, Louisville. Marshall, a West Point graduate and future Kentucky congressman and Confederate brigadier general, writes Justice McLean in part: "You are of course aware that a large portion of the American people look with anxious solicitude to your return to the political circle at no distant period. It is high time they should have the detailed history of your life and services in their hands."
On the verso, Justice McLean responds on July 30, 1845, in part: "I doubt whether a history of my life and memories would contain anything sufficiently interesting to the public to justify its publication. Of that, however, the person who shall undertake the labor of writing it may be able to judge. I know not what should withhold my facilities from one who is inclined to write the history who, is so well qualified to do so as yourself." McLean's response is not signed. The book was never published.
John Livingston Autograph Letter Signed. One page, February 24, 1852, New York, concerning John McLean's engraving in the upcoming edition of Biographical Magazine.
