[John Hancock]. John Avery Signed Fair Copy of a John Hancock Document Signed. One page, 9.5" x 14.75", "State of Massachusetts Bay," June 24, 1779. The General Court is here directing the "...Commissary General [to] deliver to the Select Men of Sutton or their Order One hundred and thirty nine Pounds of Bullets and Forty and one Pounds of Powder and to cause two Carriages for four Pound Cannon that belonged to Sutton to be replaced, said Carriages, Powder, and Ball to be transported to Sutton and replaced there at the Cost of this State..." Avery has signed at the lower edge attesting to the authenticity of this copy. Docketed on the verso. Several small holes are found scattered throughout with some loss of paper, but not affecting the text. Some areas of chipping at the edges. Small spots of waterstaining near the lower edge. Text bleed-through from the verso. Six spots on the verso from mounting has caused lightening of the paper on the recto.

    More Information:

John Avery served as deputy secretary of the Province of Massachusetts Bay under Samuel Adams. Avery later defeated Adams to be named the first secretary of the Massachusetts Commonwealth, serving from 1780 to 1806.
