    [James Polk] Lot of Correspondence From James Polk Administration-Era Statesmen, Circa 1846-1848. Includes: 1) George Bancroft Document Signed as Secretary of the Navy "Geo. Bancroft", one page, 8" x 10", [Washington], July 16, 1846, to the Honorable Daniel S Dickinson, Senator from New York, Bancroft grants permission for Midshipman Robert Townsend to return to New York, and if possible, be assigned to the sloop Albany, with the usual fold creases, otherwise excellent condition. 2) John Young Mason Document Signed as Secretary of the Navy "J. Y. Mason", one page, 7.75" x 9.75", partially printed, [Washington], September 11, 1847, to Dr. D. B. Phillips, Warrenton, Virginia, Mason signs a document soliciting qualified doctors to take the examination for admission to the Navy as Assistant Surgeons, with the usual fold creases and slightly toned, otherwise in excellent condition. 3) Robert Charles Winthrop Autograph Letter Signed as Speaker of the House of Representatives "Rob. C. Winthrop", two pages, 4.5" x 7.25", [Washington], February 8, 1848, to the Honorable George P. Marsh, thanking him for his permission to read a letter written by Col. Estcourte, with the usual fold creases and slightly foxed, else fine condition.
