[Israel Putnam] Oliver Ellsworth, Thomas Seymour, and William Pitkin Manuscript Document Signed as the Connecticut Pay Table Committee, one page, 7.5" x 4.25", [Hartford], May 16, 1775, ordering Treasurer John Laurence to pay "...Genl. Israel Putnam Fifty pounds Lawful money as he is paymaster of the first Company in the third Regiment of Troops now raising for Defense of this Colony & charge the same to Account of the Colony of Connecticut". Signed just a month before Battle of Bunker Hill where Putnam and Prescott manned a noble defense, repelling two British frontal assaults before being forced to abandon their works. Putnam, then already a Major General commanding troops in Boston, was unable to receive the payment. On the verso, his son, Israel Putnam Jr., has endorsed the verso noting receipt of the funds "in Behalf of General Putnam at Hartford, 16 May 1775. Israel Putnam Junr". Light horizontal creases, very light toning at margins, else very fine.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
